I think we’ve all been there at least once in our careers. That sinking feeling that you’re going nowhere, or even worse, you’ve made a misstep and now you’re further behind than you wanted to be at this point. We spend so much of our time in the office, it can have a massive impact on your mental health if you’re dreading your 9-5. So, what should you do when you feel stuck in a career rut? And how can you get out of it, fast?
I think this is THE most important thing to do when you’re stuck in a career rut, not only does it make you much more appealing to recruiters but it also helps to remind you of everything you have achieved so far (which can be exactly what you need when you feel stuck and like you’re going nowhere).
When you’re writing your CV focus on your achievements rather than your job roles. For example, if you’re part of a social media team throw in some stats from your most popular posts and any data on how you’ve managed to increase your employer’s followers and engagement rates. Writing down some concrete achievements can be a great confidence boost, and can help you to identify what you’re really great at doing and where you should maybe make a move to next.
Keep your job descriptions as bullet points of what you have achieved, and start your CV with a profile statement about what your strengths are and they type of job role you would ideally like to have.
I know the question ‘where do you see yourself in five years?’ is a very standard interview question, but when you’re feeling stuck the best way to re-focus and motivate yourself to make a career move is to think seriously about what you want to achieve over the next five years.
What would be your dream role? Do you want to work your way up the corporate ladder? Or run your own business? Once you’ve set the five year goal, you can work backwards to where you are now and figure out the steps you need to take to achieve that five year dream. This can be a great way to highlight any skills you need to improve, or if a making a major move might be just what you need to get you back on track with your career.
Make sure you’re following the companies you would love to work for, and connect with people you’ve recently worked with. LinkedIn can be the perfect place to find your next job role, and spending a few minutes each day on the home feed will help you to keep track of who’s hiring. If you’re not ready to move jobs yet, but just want some inspiration, I find LinkedIn a great place to read work-related articles that can help to give you that spark you need for a great idea.
Reach out to those you’ve worked with recently and ask if they would like to go for a coffee. Spending some time with people outside of work could be just what you need to decide where you want to go with your career, and they may even be able to help you out with an intro (or you may know that person they’ve been desperate to connect with)!
